Tips for Starting and Stopping Magnetic Separators

The interior of a permanent magnetic separator adopts a composite magnetic system composed of special permanent magnet materials such as "neodymium-iron-boron" (NdFeB) with high coercivity and high remanence. It has the advantages of maintenance-free operation, strong magnetic force, long service life, simple installation, easy use and reliable operation. It is suitable for removing iron from non-magnetic materials on belt conveyors, vibrating conveyors, electromagnetic vibrating feeders and discharge chutes. It can remove ferrous magnetic substances weighing 0.1-35 kilograms, and the service life of the internal permanent magnetic system is more than 10 years. When the permanent magnet adsorbs a large amount of ferrous magnetic substances, they can be removed manually with a non-magnetic scraper or by hand with gloves. It is suitable for continuous operation scenarios with low iron content.

An electromagnetic separator is an electromagnetic device used to remove iron parts from bulk non-magnetic materials. It is generally installed at the head or middle part of a belt conveyor. The strong magnetic force generated after power-on attracts the iron parts mixed in the materials, and then the iron parts are thrown out by the iron-unloading belt to achieve the purpose of automatic removal. It can effectively prevent the longitudinal cracking of the conveyor belt and protect crushers, grinders and other equipment to work normally.

The specific advantages of permanent magnetic separators (compared with electromagnetic separators) are as follows:

  1. No excitation coil, which saves electricity and energy.

  2. No need for rectifier control devices, with high reliability.

  3. No temperature rise problem, so there is no distinction between "cold state" and "hot state" for magnetic field strength, and the magnetic field is stable.

  4. When the power is cut off, the iron parts adsorbed on the separator will not fall back into the conveyed materials.

  5. No insulation and voltage resistance problems. It can be turned into an explosion-proof dust collector by being equipped with an iron-discarding conveyor belt driven by an explosion-proof motor. However, the magnetic field strength of permanent magnetic separators will attenuate, so attention should be paid to investigation and verification when selecting them.

As a common equipment in daily work, the proficiency in operating a permanent magnetic separator is directly related to the company's efficiency. Generally speaking, there are two existing operation control modes for permanent magnetic separators: one is the on-site local manual control mode, and the other is the remote automatic control mode through the central control room startup process. Under normal working conditions, the operation of the permanent magnetic separator is set to the automatic control mode. Its operation control methods are as follows:

  1. Startup control of permanent magnetic separator: The startup of the permanent magnetic separator is synchronized with the startup of the belt conveyor it is installed on. When the belt conveyor starts, a pair of normally open contacts on the closing relay in its high-voltage control cabinet are connected, and the permanent magnetic separator receives the operation command and starts running.

  2. Shutdown control of permanent magnetic separator: When the belt conveyor where the permanent magnetic separator is located stops, the closing relay on the belt conveyor's control cabinet loses power, and the normally open contacts are disconnected; the permanent magnetic separator is equipped with a delayed shutdown function, and it will stop running 10 minutes after the closing relay loses power.
